Having vision that is not 20/20 vision will result in the need of a prescription to ensure you can see clearly. That being said, most people think of glasses and contacts as their only vehicles for clearer sight. But what if there was something else that helped improve your vision without having to wear something daily? Enter LASIK eye surgery.

If you are tired of wearing glasses or contact lenses, you may be considering LASIK corrective eye surgery. If you're unfamiliar with LASIK surgery, the procedure is a type of laser eye surgery that corrects the images being focused elsewhere that result in blurry vision.

The procedure involves reshaping the cornea itself, providing the necessary refraction and vision correction. People with farsightedness, nearsightedness, or an astigmatism are candidates for LASIK eye surgery.

People with any of the following conditions would not be favorable candidates for LASIK corrective eye surgery:

  • Any eye disease with a deterioration of vision
  • Keratitis, uveitis, herpes simplex affecting the eye area, and other eye infections.
  • Eye injuries
  • Lid disorders
  • Dry eyes
  • Large pupils
  • Glaucoma
  • Cataracts

Am I a Good Candidate for LASIK Surgery?

The most basic qualifications for the procedure are that a patient is over the age of 18 and in good general health. Diabetes, autoimmune diseases, and various eye conditions increase the risk of LASIK surgery. Another factor has to do with your current vision prescription. LASIK can only correct a patient's eyesight so much, and if your prescription is stronger than the following limits, you may not experience optimal results: -11 diopters of nearsightedness, +5 diopters of farsightedness, and 5 diopters for astigmatism. Your prescription should be stable for at least two years before undergoing LASIK, because if your vision is constantly changing, the procedure will not be as effective. Lastly, a physician will check your cornea to ensure it has the proper thickness to safely make a corneal flap incision.
