What are Intraocular Lens Implants?

May 18, 2021
An intraocular lens (also known as IOL) is a tiny, artificial lens for the eye. It takes over the image-focusing function in your eye in order to replace the eye's natural lens that is removed during cataract surgery. IOLs are most commonly used as part of cataract surgery but they are also able to correct a wider range of vision problems including myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia.

Intraocular lenses are permanent, and because they are made of a perfectly transparent material, they will never cloud. IOLs are also designed to be lightweight and flexible, so they will not be affected by physical activities or by rubbing the eye. IOLs cannot fall out, do not require cleaning, and do not change the appearance of the eye in any way. They also cannot be felt once placed.

Types of Intraocular Lenses

Depending on your specific eye issues and desired outcome, there are several different types of IOLs to choose from including:
  • Toric - This is the go-to option if you have astigmatism. Astigmatism is a refractive error caused by an uneven curve in your cornea or lens. The toric lens is designed to correct that refractive error.
  • Multifocal Implants - These IOLs provide both distance and near focus at the same time. The lens has different zones set at different powers.
  • Accommodating Implants - These lenses move or change shape inside your eye, allowing focusing at different distances.
  • Monofocal Implants - A monofocal IOL has only one focal point. It can be set to focus on close, medium, or distance vision based on your preference. The most common type of lens used with cataract surgery.

How Long Do IOL Implants Last & Are They Safe?

IOL implants are made from materials that do not break down, so they will never need to be replaced. However, the treatment is reversible so implants can be exchanged if you are not experiencing vision improvements.

While there are risks associated with any type of surgery, complications after having an intraocular lens placed are rare. There may be side effects after the procedure which include bleeding, redness, and inflammation -- but these will resolve quickly. It is important to follow aftercare directions provided by your ophthalmologist to prevent infection or inflammation.

Intraocular Lens Implants and Cataract Surgery

When an intraocular lens implant is used to replace a cataract or cloudy lens, the procedure is referred to as cataract surgery. During cataract eye surgery the cloudy or cataract lens of the eye will be removed and your lens will be replaced with a new lens to improve your vision. The cataract surgeon will calculate the power of the replacement lens implant through special measurements of the length and curvature of the eye. Prior to any surgery, your ophthalmologist will examine your eyes and assess your medical history carefully to determine if you are a good candidate for an IOL.
