An intraocular lens (also known as IOL) is a tiny, artificial lens for the eye. It takes over the image-focusing function in your eye in order to replace the eye's natural lens that is removed during cataract surgery. IOLs are most commonly used as part of cataract surgery but they are also able to correct a wider range of vision problems including myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia. Intraocular lenses are permanent, and because they are made of a perfectly transparent material, they will never cloud. IOLs are also designed to be lightweight and flexible, so they will not be affected by physical activities or by rubbing the eye. IOLs cannot fall out, do not require cleaning, and do not change the appearance of the eye in any way. They also cannot be felt once placed.
